So Much More Than You Think
Who are you? or What do you do? Is the more specific version of the first question.
I can say that I’m a writer or a student, usually I say both for clarity on what I’m doing and what I want to do.
And I bet you have similar ready-to-go answers. And while there’s no problem with answering people like that, I do think it can make us forget that we are so much more.
Living your daily life and doing your job/studying and spending time on your hobbies is amazing, of course. But what I found is that sometimes you begin to judge yourself not as a human being, but as a worker/student or by how good you are at your hobby.
I know that to be true for me, as in my daily life I’m a student and a writer. And while, as a student I feel fine, as a writer I feel I’m at a beginning of an unclimbable mountain.
And I haven’t been writing for too long, but I still critique myself very harshly. I do forget that I’m not just a writer.
You forget that you are not just what you do.
You forget that you are someone’s good friend, you’re your parents’ child. You forget your own humanity.
You also forget your own potential, which is limitless. You forget what you could be. Which is pretty much anything you start pursuing.
And that can be really demoralising, because in our daily pursuits for… pretty much anything, we often forget who we actually are and why we do what we do.
It’s always important to remember that you are so much more than what you are consciously aware of. A lot of the time your own mind will be your most ruthless critic.
While it’s important to listen to that critic, it’s just as important to shove it aside, and remember that you are a human whose potential is limitless.
You are not just your profession, you are not just a student, you are a human being.
It is when you acknowledge your own potential as well as your own flaws, when you can begin to work on your flaws and explore your potential.
Most of the people I know are pretty good at recognizing their flaws, but they often forget their potential. So never forget that.
Know you will always be imperfect, but remember that you can be one step closer to perfection.
