Reflections
Sometimes in our fast paced everyday life, it’s good to stop, even if just for a bit. Stop and look back at what happened (or didn’t), what you did (or didn’t), what you could’ve learned or come to the realization that you already learned something.
It’s important to do that consciously and dedicate more than just a flying thought to it. Because it is only when you make an effort that you can extract any value from said reflection.
It doesn’t have to be hours of you pondering the past year or so, because the objective is not to dwell on the past, but merely see how your perspectives might have changed.
Just ten minutes with you and a blank page, or even just you and your own thoughts can provide clarity on what you want or should be doing right now.
As all genius things, this is very simple and effective. And it doesn’t have to be forced, you don’t have to necessarily do it every month or every year. But conscious reflections can be great sources of understanding or inspiration in times where you don’t know where to go or what to do or how to do.
Reflect on your old works and you might find inspiration for new ones or resurrect an abandoned idea/project. Reflect on your old decisions and you might understand how to make new ones. Reflect on your old thoughts and you might understand your current ones.
Notice my use of the word ‘might’ because there’s no guarantee that any of this will happen. But I believe the chances are great. I believe reflection will only yield benefits, big or small, doesn’t matter, because there’s always something to learn.
Just recently I looked back on what I was writing (and stopped) a bit more than a year ago. After reflecting on it and thinking about it, I decided that for now I don’t have anything better to write.
I tried to continue, however after a few days while working on that resurrected project of mine I found myself struggling and suddenly had an idea for a completely different story that isn’t even vaguely connected to what I was writing.
I got inspiration for something completely new from my work that’s over a year old.
So, go ahead and reflect. Think. Is there anything of value there? I would bet there is. But don’t take my word for it, go and see for yourself.
