Fear Not the Sun

For You are a Phoenix as much as You are Icarus

Most of you have heard the phrase “Don’t fly too close to the sun” and while I believe there is a lot of truth to that saying, I also think you can defy this saying, and find that the Sun is beautiful.

By After Peter Paul Rubens/ Peter Paul Rubens/ Jacob Peter Gowy — https://www.museodelprado.es/en/the-collection/art-work/the-fall-of-icarus/2823dc25-398a-4d88-a4b2-be314065a62dPreviously: http://www.museodelprado.es/imagen/alta_resolucion/P01540_01.jpg, Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=27493281

That is to say, take risks. Be Icarus. It will be scary, maybe even the worst thing to ever happen to you. Maybe the Sun will burn you down, and leave you burnt out in the depths of the sea. This is the worst case scenario, and even then, the hope is not lost. Remember the Phoenix. It rises out of a pile of ash, just to be burned down again.

However, unlike the Phoenix or Icarus, one day, you will see the Sun and the universe around it in all its glory.

I think this might be one of the most crucial things in life. Not being afraid of the Sun. Using the wings that were given to you. Forget Daedalus and his warnings — embrace the limitless ambition of Icarus and the infinite regeneration of the Phoenix.

Because if you don’t, you might find that you have forgotten how to use your wings. You might even find that despite you not daring approach the Sun, you still lost your wings.

“How?” you will think.

Like a muscle that isn’t trained, your wings will be be weak if you never use them and eventually… gone. You will hurt your wings either down here on Earth or up there with Icarus.

I know that I’d choose to lose my wings in the heat of passion instead of in the frigidness of fear.

Don’t let Icarus’s story discourage you, instead, combine it with the myth of the Phoenix, and then you will conquer not just the Sun, but the Stars. Just remember that no matter how much the Sun burns, out of ashes you shall rise again, and back into the heat of life.

Each time you will be closer and closer. You will keep falling back to the ground, until one day you’ll understand that you don’t need wax for your wings.

Go. Conquer the Sun… and beyond.
